Hugh Walpole

(Auckland, Nuova Zelanda, 1884 - Keswick, Cumberland, 1941) scrittore inglese. Dopo gli studi a Cambridge, prima di dedicarsi esclusivamente all’attività letteraria, fu per un certo tempo insegnante laico nella chiesa anglicana. I suoi romanzi, avvivati da una scrittura ricca e fluente, spesso riuniti in cicli, appartengono alla narrativa di costume: così le trilogie La città che sorge (The rising city, 1914-20) e Jeremy (1919-27) e la serie di quattro romanzi intitolata La saga degli Herries (The Herries chronicle, 1930-34). La sua opera migliore è La tetra selva (The dark forest, 1916), vicenda di guerra in parte autobiografica, mentre il Ritratto di un uomo dai capelli rossi (Portrait of a man with red hair, 1925) è un efficace romanzo dell’orrore.
